DXM (Dextromethorphan)

The effects of DXM can be blocked by nalaxone (Narcan), an opioid antagonist which reverses respiratory depression following an overdose. DXM is an effective over-the-counter cough suppressant ingredient found in brand names such as Robitussin and Dimetapp DM.

Medical Uses

It is included in many non-prescription preparations, which often have DXM or DM in their name.

Short Term Effects

DXM abusers experience euphoria, auditory and visual hallucinations, altered time perception, loss of coordination and muscle control, and increased pulse. Many users liken the effects to those of LSD or mushrooms. A user will experience four plateaus: slight intoxication, strong intoxication, hallucination, and sub-anaesthetic.

Long Term Effects

Excessive DXM use can include such side-effects as high blood pressure, loss of consciousness, permanent brain damage, coma, seizure, stroke and death. Suddenly stopping chronic use of high doses of DXM may lead to withdrawal symptoms of dysphoria (anxiety and restlessness), emotional distress, and sleep difficulties.

Tolerance and Dependance

Abuse of DXM is especially dangerous as cold medications contain combinations of other drugs that when taken in excessive amounts can result in their own severe side effects.

Legal Status

Sold legally in over-the-counter cough syrups.
